Abstract

The circulatory hemodynamics were studied before and after a portocaval shunt operation in patients with bilharzial hepatic fibrosis. The circulation became hyperkinetic. The cardiac output increased mainly as a result of an augmented stroke volume. The systemic and pulmonary vascular resistances diminished. The increased volume load increased the heart volume, but the intracardiac and pulmonary pressures remained normal. The importance of excluding early bilharzial cor pulmonale, as well as curing active bilharziasis before the operation, is stressed.
