Abstract

A method for quantifying the turbidity of offshore water masses using LANDSAT imagery is discussed and the results of a laboratory experiment correlating radiance with concentrations of suspended Mississippi River sediment are presented. The results of the experiment are used to plot suspended sediment contours on eight LANDSAT images of the Louisiana Bight. These contours are observed to depend on the speed and direction of the wind as well as the amount of fresh water discharged by the Mississippi River. The presence of a clockwise circulation in the bight is also indicated by the contours.
