Abstract

The authors have studied a corpus of 920 polished axes from public and private collections in the three départements of the Auvergne region (Cantal, Haute-Loire, Puy-de-Dôme). Some of these axes are made from, imported materials, such as eclogite and jade it it e from the Italian Alps or cretaceous flint from the Berry region. The Neolithic population also used local rocks: fibrolite, tertiary flint, lavas and palaeo-lavas. Important differences are to be noted in materials used from one area of Auvergne to the other, revealing the complexity of supply strategies.
