Abstract

Prior to, and 12 to 14 days after, transfusion lymphocytes (L) and white blood cells (WBC) were isolated from venous blood samples. Release of antibodies directed against red blood cells (RBC) of the donor were demonstrated by local hemolysis in gel. Controls were done with RBC of the recipient. The results show a significant increase of antibody-releasing cells after transfusion in L. A significant increase among WBC could not be found. Results demonstrate a possible sensitization against transmitted RBC even if serological tests are negative.
