Abstract

Summary Circulating immune complexes (IC) were investigated by Clq-binding assays and the platelet aggregation test in sera from 58 patients with enteric infections of various aetiology. Circulating IC could be demonstrated, in all but one out of 14 patients with reactive joint symptoms complicating the enteritis and in 26 out of 44 patients (59 per cent) without joint symptoms. Thus, circulating IC were common irrespective of type of enteric infection and whether the disease was complicated by reactive arthritis or not. The high incidence of HL-A 27 in patients with reactive arthritis was confirmed. The presence of specific antibodies in the circulating IC was supported by the finding in one case of an increased IgG titre against salmonella antigens after dissociation of IC at low pH. The assumption that the nature of the antigen in the IC might be more important in the pathogenesis of postinfectious sequelae than the actual presence of circulating IC, was favoured by this investigation.
