Abstract

Two axially chiral BODIPY-binaphthalene dyads, (R)-/(S)-BDP1-2, were synthesized by tethering BODIPY to the 3- or 3,3′-position of chiral binaphthalene. (R)-/(S)-BDP1 show a very weak Cotton effect and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), demonstrating the inefficient perturbation effect of binaphthalene on BODIPY in both ground and excited state. In contrast, (R)-/(S)-BDP2 show an intense Cotton effect and CPL. According to the theoretical results, this difference should be originated from the energy transfer between the two BODIPY units in (R)-/(S)-BDP2.
