Abstract

Unlike other industrial sectors that already apply re-manufacturing, the construction sector is slow to experiment with these sustainable practices. Hence, this paper introduces key results of the Re-NetTA project, conducted at Politecnico di Milano and funded by Fondazione Cariplo (2018-0991), which intends to outline the conditions necessary to activate circular processes in the field of tertiary construction. In order to extend the life of construction products, the paper proposes three circular models based on re-manufacturing. Developed with stakeholders and experts in an inter-sectoral and multidisciplinary approach, the proposed models represent a contribution towards sustainable design and organisational practices of construction products.

Highlights

  • Re-manufacturing is generally intended as the restoring process of a product that is no longer able to perform its function to a like-new functional state, by rebuilding and replacing its component parts with minimum consumption of materials and energy (Bernat, 2019; Gunasekara et al, 2018)

  • Proposal of organisational models based on re-manufacturing for the construction sector A crucial issue for the application of circular economy practices is the definition of organisational models, understood as a set of strategic and operational solutions with which the creation of value occurs (Osterwalder and Pigneur, 2010)

  • The growing attention on the issues of circular economy and re-manufacturing is evidenced by a variety of experiences in different business sectors

Introduction

The offer of products for rent (without transfer of ownership) aims to sensitise providers and producers towards the design and manufacture of products characterised by high durability and maintainability, allowing more use cycles before reaching the end-oflife This may lead to an extension over 01 | Modello organizzativo “Contratto di noleggio a supporto del re-manufacturing” “Rent contract as a support for re-manufacturing” organisational model. All-inclusive solution to support remanufacturing The second organisational model (Fig. 2) implies that the product is sold to the customer together with a set of services, performed during the product use phase, aimed at extending its useful life These services include, for instance: cleaning, repair, maintenance, replacement and re-manufacturing. Queste ultime sono ritenute dagli stakeholder strategiche al fine di sensibilizzare la domanda rispetto alle pratiche circolari, stimolando di conseguenza anche l’offerta
