Abstract

Large area circular position sensitive Si(Li) detectors of 70 mm in diameter are developed. Electrolytic bath experiments are made for the design of electrodes, and arc-shape electrodes of 90° show a good linear relation between output signals and positions. Detectors of 1 mm and 4 mm in thickness are fabricated. The position resolution of 0.6 mm (fwhm) is obtained for light pulses from a light emitting diode corresponding to the deposited energy of 11 MeV. The linear relation between output signals and incident positions is in good agreement with the result of electrolytic bath experiments. d E/d x· E detector telescopes with high luminosity (46 sr· cm 2 for 12C- 13C, 26 sr· cm 2 for 56Fe- 57Fe) and high mass resolution ( ΔA = ±0.5) for identification of the primary cosmic ray isotopes are described.
