Abstract
This letter presents a circuit model to design a double-layer square artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) with a small period relative to the wavelength in the UHF band. The miniaturization is achieved thanks to a square patch array printed alternatively on each side of a thin dielectric substrate. These closely spaced arrays cause a high grid impedance allowing to decrease the period of the AMC. The proposed model is validated by simulations for several configurations and by measurements. The resonance frequency of the realized AMC is 2.68 GHz with a bandwidth of 260 MHz. The dimensions of the unit cell are $ 11.5 \times 11.5~\hbox{mm}^2$ or $0.1{\lambda _0} \times 0.1{\lambda _0}$ .
