Abstract

Flameless natural gas combustion with air in a CaO/MgO packed bed, operated as a differential reactor without diffusional limitations, was studied, in order to get kinetic parameters. Methane reaction order with concentrations between 1.5 and 3.0% v/v was determined using air-natural gas mixtures with 100% excess oxygen. In order to get the reaction order for oxygen, its concentration was varied between 6.0 and 9.0% v/v while methane was 3.0% v/v. Activation energy and preexponential factor were determined for the temperature range 612.5 to 650oC. LangmuirHinshelwood-Hougen-Watson type kinetics was obtained, reaction orders were one for methane and zero for oxygen, activation energy 136.64 kJ/mol and pre-exponential factor 15946 mol/g min. Results are useful in equipment design for natural gas combustion and for treating gaseous emissions containing methane.
