Abstract

Among directors from the 1930s, Fei Mu is regarded as a refreshing “author of film” in China.He believed that film is an independent art that should be free from the bond of drama since film itself is rich in expressing signification.Fei Muendorsed a“director-centered” system in which the director is seen as an “author” of a film. He also believed that Chinese films should learn from traditional arts, like Chinese painting and calligraphy, to create a unique national style.
