Abstract

The population of older stepmothers is one whose voices have rarely been heard. In this research, women who had married men with children traced the development of relations with their now-grown stepchildren through the years. Women who had married divorced men had greater difficulties relating to stepchildren than those who had married widowers. Acting assertively and accepting responsibility, stepmothers often fulfilled pivotal roles in stepfamilles as “carpenters” who repaired damaged intergenerational relationships.
