Abstract

Newcastle-based industrial and mining equipment manufacturer Victor Products had just decided to install a computerised flexible manufacturing system when the miners strike began. Undeterred, the company got on with the job of sorting out the system and, despite dipping momentarily into the red, is now enjoying healthy profits and is planning to install several other similar systems, all connected to form one of the UK's few truly integrated manufacturing systems. With the first phase of the system almost complete, Rory Baxter was allowed an exclusive ‘peek’ at how Victor plans to make computer integrated manufacturing work.
