The beauty of the eukaryotic cilium has been appreciated since electron microscopy first revealed its 9-fold symmetry. In this issue of Cell, Ma etal. use cryoelectron microscopy and modeling todefine doublet microtubules at near-atomic resolution, revealing an intricate array of proteins decorating the inner and outer surfaces.
