Diabetes in Aboriginal communities has often been described as having reached epidemic proportions over the past several decades. Among the things we know about Aboriginal people and diabetes are that they have a 3 to 5 times greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes than other Canadians, and that Aboriginal children as young as 5 years of age have been diagnosed with diabetes ( 1.
