Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of CICNet. It is an outgrowth of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a group organized to provide academic cooperation among the members of the Big Ten plus the University of Chicago. Its mission is to provide its member organizations with the ability to share advanced information systems, including high-speed data networking, computing, video, and telecommunications facilities for the purpose of enhancing scientific research and academic facilities within a seven-state region of the midwestern United States. At present, CICNet operates an eleven-node backbone network, consisting entirely of T1 facilities from MCI or the appropriate LEC, Cisco Systems routers, and Datatel CSUs. The network has been operational since March, 1989, and has been performing quite well.
