Abstract

The following analysis of bicycle tourism offers the Caldo de Caña sugarcane mead route as a way to bring tourism and valorisation of traditional culture to the rural area of São Bernardo, Maranhão. It starts with an exploratory -descriptive and interdisciplinary approach, articulating the concepts of tourism and landscape in rural areas. A survey of the attractions existing on the Caldo de Caña bike route was carried out, with the challenges and opportunities for structuring a tourist product discussed. The study points to the need to include the residents of the São Raimundo village in the expanding tourism dynamics, through strategies of mobilization and articulation with public and private initiatives, so that the tourist activity adds value to the rural environment and translates itself into better living standards and an enhanced local quality of life
