Abstract
The CIBA symposium on social conflict is an ambitious attempt bring together and synthesize a wealth of interrelated information. The participants, 23 in number, are drawn very largely from the social sciences, although from widely different sectors of that area. There are but two or three physicians; sociologists and political scientists predominate, with economics, anthropology, and psychology being well represented. The absence of a noncommunist historian is be regarded as a rather serious omission, as many questions are raised which would benefit from an unfettered historical interpretation. With two exceptions the participants are from Western Europe and the United States. The aim of the book, in terms of humanitarian concern, is high. It is to discuss conflict between social groups at a hierarchy of levels in a way which will facilitate man's turning the light of his intellect against the problem of conflict in society.
