Abstract

The Ciba Foundation of London, founded in 1947 by Ciba Limited, Basel, Switzerland, organizes conferences for informal discussion between research workers from all nations. In addition, the foundation sponsors an annual lecture, an exchange program between French and British postgraduate students, and a library service. Most noteworthy of its achievements is the publication of the proceedings of the conferences. Past meetings have included symposiums on aging and endocrinology, and biochemical and hematological aspects of medicine. One who reads a Ciba Foundation Symposium for the first time may be pleased to find that the editors have avoided all the pitfalls so characteristic of this type of publication. With very little apparent editing, the small talk and the introductory remarks are at a minimum.
