Abstract

The presentations and discussions which make up this volume occurred Oct 8-10, 1963, with excellent representation of workers in the field of diabetes. The proceedings are easily read and quite free of transcript errors. The contents provide the reader with current knowledge, ignorance, and dilemnas concerning the origins of diabetes mellitus and its complications. Particularly valuable are the lengthy and well-edited discussions at the end of most chapters. These are all the more noteworthy in that statements are supported by citation of pertinent literature. This feature provides a series of reviews in miniature of a panorama of diabetes-related subjects. The volume includes presentation of studies of the prevalence of diabetes in a community, the use of the diabetic Chinese hamster to study glomerulosclerosis, the variables in insulin secretion, measurements of plasma insulin by various techniques, factors identified to date as operative in insulin antagonism, interrelation of glucose and fatty acid
