Abstract

Rationale: Chyme reinfusion (CR) in intestinal failure (IF) patients with a temporary double enterostomy (TDE) restores intestinal function and protects against liver injury, but the mechanisms are incompletely understood. We hypothesized that functional recovery of the enterohepatic circulation by CR and attendant restoration of bile salt signaling and endocrine actions of the bile salt-regulated ileal hormone FGF19 in IF-TDE patients are associated with CR-related beneficial effects.
