Abstract

Modern health practices were introduced to much of the Third World by Christian missionaries—the institutions which they founded provide a substantial part of the total health care systems in Africa today. The increasingly important role of the state has led to church-state conflict over the financing and development of health-promoting facilities in Africa. This paper examines the various factors affecting health policies in Kenya, with special reference to the role of church-related health organizations.
