Abstract

Introduction: We have previously shown that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) significantly increases mucosal protein and DNA content beyond the normal adaptive response at a single timepoint during intestinal adaptation in rats. Also, our previous microarray studies have demonstrated an early emphasis on genes related to mucosal hypertrophy and a later emphasis on genes related to mucosal hyperplasia. This study was designed to correlate the previously identified gene changes with mucosal changes after massive small bowel resection (MSBR) and with the addition of HGF.
