Abstract
Chronology uses the methods of two highly technical disciplines, philology and astronomy: the former to interpret texts, the latter to fix the exact times of any dateable celestial events, like new and full moons and eclipses, which the texts mention. The roles played by chronology in early modern European culture deserve equally intense study. In organising the Prodigiorum ac ostentorum chronicon , accordingly, Conrad Lycosthenes took care to connect almost all of the wonders he recounted to precise dates. In the preface to the Nuremberg Chronicle , Hartmann Schedel made clear that he saw the recent collections of 'the scattered inscriptions of the Latins and Greeks, with their antiquities', as his model. Manuscript Syllogai - like the Chronicle - emphasised geographical space, rather than historical time, as the chief organising principle for recording the remains of the ancient world.
