Abstract

Chronic Pancreatitis: Pathogenesis, Molecular Pathophysiology, and Genetic Changes Most cases of chronic pancreatitis are caused by immoderate alcohol consumption or alcohol abuse. The type of alcoholic beverage that is being excessively consumed, on the other hand, appears to be immaterial for the onset of pancreatitis. Over the last decade a number of pathophysiological, biochemical and genetic studies have permitted a better understanding of the pathogenetic basis of chronic pancreatitis. This elucidation of the molecular mechanisms involved in the disease process will most probably lead to the development of causal treatment modalities – although none is available so far. Here we review the latest developments and research results that have addressed the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis.
