Abstract

The specialist area of chronic pain has developed in Britain since the 1980’s to respond to the un-met need of those whose distressing intractable pain has not been helped by conventional treatments. Cognitive behavioral therapy is now the treatment of choice to help improve sufferers quality of life despite continuing pain. The paper examines the consequences of this often disabling condition and describes the enabling self management approach undertaken at INPUT at St Thomas’ hospital in London.
