Abstract
General mortality data are probably too insensitive to estimate effects of chronic low-level air pollution. Morbidity data are better, especially if designed as prospective epidemiological studies. It appears that the most sensitive approach is to use simple tests of pulmonary function. Further work is indicated to identify the most sensitive of the existing tests of pulmonary function for field surveys.
