Abstract

Disability and rehabilitation authorities have long emphasised the important contribution to be made (in service planning and program implementation) by the individual living with the impairment or disability. However, the precise nature of this involvement has not always been clearly described, whiah creates problems or urlcertaintiesfor health researchers as well asfor those develoPing intervention programs. Thepresent paper explicates three prominerlf personal control constructs ( 1ocus of control , se/f-l!fficacy, explanatory style '') and, by linking them with the WHO's international classtfication system (IClDH), illustrates the role of personal control variables in preventing the development ~f unnecessary disabilities, and, in facilitating the overcoming ~f barriers, to enhanced quality ~f life and optimal community participation following injury or disease onset.
