Abstract

In 2019 the European Society for Cardiology (ESC) published guidelines for the diagnosis and management of chronic coronary syndromes (CCS). Thus the term "stable coronary artery disease" is replaced by CCS. The newly introduced term is based on the current understanding of pathogenesis and clinical features of coronary artery disease (CAD) as well as therapeutic management. CCS defines CAD as achronic process that can be influenced by lifestyle adjustments, pharmacological therapies and invasive interventions (percutaneous coronary intervention, coronary artery bypass grafting) with the aim of stabilization or regression. The present work provides an overview of various scenarios that involve CCS and diagnostic pathways to clarify potentially relevant CAD. It also highlights therapeutic management and secondary preventive procedures in accordance with the current recommendations of the ESC.
