Basic measurements and analytical methods. White, O. R. ; Athay, R. G. Abstract Time series of solar EUV line profiles observed with OSO 8 have fluctuations arising from instrumental, satellite, and solar sources. The fluctuations are partly noiselike, partly from long-term drifts, and partly from periodic oscillations. The Sun contributes to all three types of fluctuations. However, instrumental effects also contribute to the noiselike fluctuations and long-term drifts, and the satellite wheel rotation induces spurious oscillations. Analytical procedures are discussed for applying Fourier transform techniques and related statistical tests to isolate the different types of fluctuations and, in particular, to study the solar oscillations. Strong solar oscillations are identified near 3 mHz, and aliases of the wheel rotation frequency are identified at 10.5 and 27 mHz.
