Abstract

The chromosomal characteristics of two species belonging to the genus Serrasalmus (S. spilopleura and S. marginatus) from the Parana basin were studied. The two species showed the same diploid chromosome number 2n=60. However, they showed peculiarities in karyotypic structure that permit their identification, indicating that pericentric inversions were present and were probably the most frequent chromosomal alterations that occurred during the evolution of this genus.
