Abstract

The somatic metaphase chromosome complements of seven species of pocket mice, genus Perognathus , subgenus Chaetodipus , were analyzed from dividing bone marrow cells. The species studied include P. penicillatus (2n = 46), P. pernix (2n=38), P. intermedins (2n = 46), P. goldmani (2n = 52), P. artus (2n = 54), P. baileyi (2n = 48), and P. hispidus (2n = 34). Chromosome characters serve to arrange these species in species-groups and sibling species lines. Such taxonomic conclusions are generally those established by Osgood (1900). The one exception is P. pernix , which herein is included in the intermedius -group. This arrangement is supported by evidence drawn from aspects of the pelage, baculum, and karyotype.
