Abstract

Chromosome numbers are reported for 135 collections of grasses from western Zaïre representing 53 genera and 93 species. First chromosome counts are reported for the genera Puelia, Heteranthoecia, and Vossia and for the following 29 species: Puelia ciliata, Puelia olyriformis, Aristida dewildemanii, Eragrostis barteri, Eragrostis squamata, Eragrostis thollonii, Sporobolus subtilis, Perotis vaginata, Loudetia demeusei, Loudetia vanderystii, Trichopteryx fruticulosa, Heteranthoecia guineensis, Isachne kiyalaensis, Antephora cristata, Digitaria acuminutissima, Panicum baumannii, Panicum dregeanum, Panicum nervatum, Pennisetum nodiflorum, Sacciolepis rigens, Setaria restioides, Andropogon festuciformis, Elionurus brazzae, Elionunis hensii, Eriochrysis brachypogon, Hyparrhenia familiaris, Jardinea gabonensis, Schizachyrium pulchellum, and Vossia cuspidata. Counts differing from previous records were obtained for these nine species: Eragrostis superba, Ctenium newtonii, Brachiaria mutica, Echinochloa stagnina, Ottochloa nodosa, Setaria anceps, Andropogon huillensis, Jardinea congoensis, and Trachypogon spicatus.
