Abstract
The genus Peperomia Ruiz & Pav. includes over one thousand species distributed throughout the warmer regions of the world but with a concentration of species in tropical and subtropical South America. The cytological data so far recorded for the genus is meagre and in some instances conflicting; because of this, some of the species in cultivation at Kew have been studied. It is unfortunate that, of the 20 species examined, the country of origin of only 3 is known, Io having been received without information from Botanic Gardens and the remaining 7 have no recorded origins.
