Abstract

Chromatography has been widely used in the studies on plasmalogens. It has been used for the following purposes: 1. A rapid and simultaneous determination in total lipid extracts of phosphatide classes and their constituent plasmalogens by reaction two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography. 2. Isolation of neutral plasmalogens by adsorption chromatography. 3. Separation of molecular species of phosphatide plasmalogens by partition column and argentation adsorption column chromatography. 4. Separation of derivatives of phosphatide plasmalogens from the accompanying alkyl acyl- and diacyl derivatives by a combination of adsorption and argentation adsorption thin-layer chromatography. 5. Separation of cis synthetic neutral plasmalogen from the corresponding trans isomer by gas-liquid chromatography or argentation thin-layer chromatography. 6. Analysis of fatty acid and aldehyde composition of plasmalogens by thin-layer chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography. A brief review on the chemistry, biochemistry and synthesis of plasmalogens is included.
