Abstract

Serratia marcescens, isolated from tannery effluents, was resistant to chromate (0.5 mM) under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. A stable biofilm was developed, using activated carbon as a support. Extracellular precipitate suggests that insoluble chromium hydroxide was formed. The strain showed an enhanced cell growth in an aerobic culture medium, although under anaerobic conditions chromate reduction was carried out more efficiently. About 95% of chromate was reduced in 4 days.
