Abstract

On Monday, June 25, 2018, H. Tristram Engelhardt, Jr., PhD, MD, founder of Christian Bioethics: Non-Ecumenical Studies in Medical Morality, was laid to rest at Holy Archangels Orthodox Christian monastery, set within the beautiful Hill Country of Texas near Comal County. Professor Engelhardt founded Christian Bioethics in 1995. He served as Editor and then Senior Editor from 1995 until 2018. Christian Bioethics thrived for more than two decades through his energy, vision, and dedication. One of the intellectual founders of the fields that would become known as bioethics and the philosophy of medicine, Engelhardt’s seminal scholarship has framed philosophical debates surrounding healthcare policy and medical practice throughout the world. Professor Engelhardt’s work over the past two decades has focused largely on articulating a traditional Christian bioethics. He made major contributions in advancing our understanding of what bioethics is when it is set within the beliefs, practices, and commitments of the ancient Christian Church. Christian Bioethics mourns his passing.
