Abstract
The thorough cleaning and high-level disinfection or sterilisation of heat sensitive instruments and equipment, preferably using a validated washer disinfector and an effective, non-damaging disinfectant, will minimise the risk of infection, prolong the life of the device and protect the quality of diagnostic samples. No disinfectant or washer disinfector meets all the preferred selection criteria at present, but a careful appraisal of the options, using the criteria outlined, will enable you to choose a processor and disinfectant that more nearly meet your requirements.
