Abstract

In the course of a work-up for left carpal tunnel syndrome in a 60-year-old right-handed woman, a slightly tender, firm mass was discovered in the left second metacarpal. An x-ray film revealed a lucent lesion with sclerotic borders arising from the dorsal aspect of the distal metaphyseal-diaphyseal area of the second metacarpal (Fig. 1). At surgery, an open left carpal tunnel release was perfomed and the skin closed. The index metacarpal tumor was then separately exposed via a longitudinal dorsal incision. This revealed a bulging, cartilaginous-appearing mass immediately beneath the periosteum. In the course of curettement it appeared that the mass had indented the underlying bone and that it was limited by cortical bone on its palmar surface. Following thorough curettage, the defect was filled in with bone grail taken from the distal radius.
