Abstract

1. 1. The amounts of free and esterified cholesterol and the cholesteryl ester fatty acid composition of upper thoracic aortas and muscular foci at the celiac bifurcation in 1-day-old, 6-week-old and 6-month-old pigeons ( Columba livia) were determined. 2. 2. There were no significant age differences in the amounts of free and esterified cholesterol or in the cholesteryl ester fatty acid composition of upper thoracic aortas. 3. 3. In celiac foci the amount of cholesteryl esters increased with age. Accumulation of saturated cholesteryl esters accounted for 70% of the increase. 4. 4. The pattern of cholesteryl ester accumulation in celiac foci of young pigeons resembles that seen in the aortas of other young animals including humans.
