Abstract

Cholesterol crystal embolization (CCE) syndrome is defined as dislodgement of cholesterol crystals greater than 200 μm in size from atheromatous intimal plaques. Panum1 described the phenomenon of embolization of atheromatous material in 1862. However, Florey is credited with accurately describing the process of occlusion of arterioles by cholesterol crystals.2,3 The syndrome presents as a systemic illness during or immediately after an arterial catheterization, aortic surgery, thrombolytic therapy, or anticoagulation.
