Abstract
Direct cholangiograms were studied in 10 cases of cholangiolitic hepatitis. Intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholangiograms were normal in 2 cases. In 8 cases, diffuse and focal narrowing or shortening and diminished branching of the intrahepatic bile ducts were found. An abnormal cholangiogram of the extrahepatic bile ducts was found in only 1 of the 8 cases with positive roentgenologic findings, and this was characterized by filling defects due to inspissated bile.In cholangiolitic hepatitis the extrahepatic bile ducts are not involved. The nature of the lesions causing the abnormal intrahepatic cholangiograms is unknown. Marked decrease in the number of histologically identifiable small interlobular ducts occurred both with normal and with abnormal cholangiograms.The roentgenographic changes observed in cholangiolitic hepatitis usually can be distinguished from those of sclerosing cholangitis and carcinoma of the bile ducts.
