Abstract

A universal program is used to design a steel smelting process suitable for any steel smelting unit, and technical and economic indices are determined for remelting scrap in open-hearth, converter and electric-arc furnaces. Scrap processing in converters is limited by the content of oxidizable impurities in converted pig iron. An increase in the proportion of scrap at the expense of an increase in the silicon content in iron increases energy expenditure throughout the whole cycle, increases the output of slag and dust discharge in all stages of iron conversion and remelting. The best unit for processing scrap should be recognized as a new generation of electric-arc furnaces with magnetodynamic mixing of the steel smelting bath, which makes it possible to improve all ecological indices of melting considerably.
