Abstract

Enthusiasm for learning is a major goal at the American School in Japan, but several years ago we became painfully aware that as far as mathematics was concerned, the children were far from enthusiastic. Our students, mostly American businessmen's children, usually did pretty well according to national test scores in the United States, but boredom, lack-luster mathematics classes, and tension were too common.
