Abstract
The effects of shifting ecological validities in two single-cue environments ( r e : .895 → .634 and .634 →. 895) on subjects' consistency and achievement were examined. The amount of information about the shift and the number of preshift trials were also varied. Results showed a significant order effect and that subjects probability matched under both preshift ecologies but highly overstructured in the .634 postshift ecology and understructured in the .895 postshift ecology. Differential performance across blocks was observed for the postshift ecologies. No systematic effects were obtained for the information and number of preshift trial variables. The results were discussed in the frameworks of the Brunswik normative lens model and the AB—BA transfer paradigm.
