Abstract

Abstract Nymphs and adults of Amblyomma americanum (L.), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille), and Dermacentor andersoni Stiles attached Co guinea pigs were topically treated with 0.03125-1.0% chlordimeform [N'-(4-chloro-o-tolyl)-N,N-dimethylformamidine] in 1 ul of acetone. At 0.5-1.0%, 83.9-85.5% of adult A. americanum and at 0.125-0.25%, all adult R. sanguineus and D. andersoni detached within 2 hr of treatment. Chlord meform was less effective as a tick detachment agent with nymphs than adults but was more toxic to nymphs than adults. The compound was highly effective in causing ticks to detach; it alto caused a slow and incomplete kill of the detached ticks.
