Abstract

All 30 patients included in this study had failed standard nasal packs. 16 patients (53%) were packed with Rapid-Rhino® pack, and 14 (47%) with Pope Merocel® pack. Chitosan-coated packing resulted in effective and rapid hemostasis in 28 out of 30 (93%) patients, and was kept in the nasal cavity for a duration of 48 hours. The two patients who could not be controlled with the chitosanwrapped nasal packing were taking the following 3 blood-thinners simultaneously: Aspirin, Plavix and Coumadin. One patient was treated successfully with a double pack of chitosan wrapped nasal plugs, and the other patient had to undergo endoscopic ligation of the sphenopalatine artery. There were no side effects related to the use of the chitosan wrapped nasal pack.
