Abstract

IntroductionThoracotomy has been considered as the gold standard approach for lobectomy. However, the number of procedures performed by video-assisted approach (VATS) has steadily increased during the recent years.State of the art: VATS approach for lobectomy is so far validated for stage I lung cancer. VATS lobectomies are associated with less post-operative morbidity, lower hospital stay, allowing their integration into “fast track” recovery programs. VATS complies to oncologic resection rules, allowing a complete lymphadenectomy. Furthermore, it seems that VATS lobectomies are linked to better overall survival and recurrence free survival. PerspectivesOwing to its many advantages, VATS pulmonary resections could be extended in the future to more advanced stages, benign pulmonary diseases, as well as lung metastasectomy. ConclusionBecause of its many advantages, VATS lobectomy can be regarded as the gold standard approach for stage I lung cancer surgery.
