Abstract

The ORD curves of several dansyl amino acids have been measured. Most derivatives of the ( S)-configuration showed a positive Cotton effect at 260 nm. The sign of this effect was rationalized in terms of conformational analysis and was caused by twisting of the sulfonamide group. These results can be employed to determine the configuration of amino acids in natural products.
