Abstract

In Fennoscandia, two Chironomus species show the characteristic features of C. pilicornis Fabricius, but are different in karyotypes, larval types, pupal characters and size. I associated the smaller species with C. pilicornis and described the larger species as C. heteropilicornis sp.n. Both species occur sympatrically in Kyrkosjarvi/ Western Finland and seem to prefer very shallow areas. Exact data on ecology and distribution are scarce because the many older notes on “C. pilicornis” cannot be attributed unambigously to either species.
